About This Course

This course presents an introduction to phonetics as the study of speech sounds. It provides first-year university students with fundamental knowledge of speech sound production, classification, and transcription. The course focuses primarily on the English sound system especially that we aim at making their pronunciation a better one. Students will explore the three main branches of phonetics—articulatory, acoustic, and auditory—with particular emphasis on articulatory phonetics. Through systematic study of speech organs, voicing mechanisms, and sound classification systems, learners will develop practical skills in phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet. The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, featuring interactive exercises, audio examples, and self-assessment tools. Students will master the classification and production of English vowels (including monophthongs, diphthongs, and triphthongs) and consonants (organized by manner and place of articulation). This foundation course prepares students for advanced studies in linguistics, language teaching, speech therapy, and related fields requiring precise understanding of speech sound systems.
